“Jesus, someone get me another beer!” said Alamo Drafthouse programs and promotions coordinator Papa Josh 20 minutes into Spike & Mike’s Sick and Twisted Animation Festival. Papa had just viewed John Goras’s Chirpy, three minutes of a bird having sex with a horse to psychedelic music. Imbibing seemed like the best way to brace himself for whatever was next -- and come to terms with the fact that he was unleashing the short on Houston. “My wife didn’t believe we were actually going to put this in the theater,” Papa said.

The 15th annual showcase, compiled by California animation buffs Spike and Mike, includes 25 shorts. Brad Neely’s animated rap Cox & Combes/Washington portrays the first president as the original gangsta, tearing mountain goats in half and eating British troops’ brains. In Josh Look’s computer-animated Asexuality, a flower’s melancholy speech is cut short when it’s face-raped by a bee. The low point (or high point, depending on your sense of humor) is Justin Bastard Sane’s Teddy Bear Picnic, which would be better titled Cannibal Teddy Bear Picnic.
